So let’s get that coffee brewing and start with the news🗞️ first👇🏻
People want to delete Instagram!😱
According to a report by TRG Datacentres, Threads saw a massive drop in daily active users of around 80% since its peak this summer. But that didn’t come as a surprise. What did come as a surprise was the fact that Instagram came up on top as the social media app most users wanted to delete in 2023. Over 1 million people globally searched how to delete their Instagram accounts each month, which amounts to 12,500 searches per 100,000 people globally were made each month on how to delete Instagram accounts.
OpenAI may raise at least $100 billions!
The AI startup is in talks to raise a new funding round at a valuation of at least $100 billion, according to Bloomberg. OpenAI has also discussed raising between $8-10 billion specifically for a new chip venture with Abu Dhabi's G42. This comes as the company is set to close a separate $86 billion tender offer in January. Well done Daddy Sam!🥵
Apple offers news publishers over $50 million for AI development
Apple has reportedly approached major news organisations about licensing their archives. These include Condé Nast, NBC News, IAC, The Daily Beast, and Better Homes and Gardens. The multiyear deals worth at least $50 million would allow Apple to use articles to train AI systems. The move shows Apple trying to catch up to rivals with generative AI tech.
Microsoft's Windows 10 support end spurs PC e-waste concerns
Microsoft's plan to end Windows 10 support in 2025 may spur 240 million personal computers to become e-waste, adding 480 million kg to landfills - equivalent to 320,000 cars, according to Canalys Research. Though many older PCs could still function beyond 2025, demand may fall without security updates. Microsoft will provide updates until 2028 for an unspecified fee. But based on past trends, upgrading may cost less than extending Windows 10 support, so discarding older PCs could rise as users migrate to newer devices.
Bluesky? More Like ClearSky!!(My humour took a hit)
Bluesky, a decentralized Twitter alternative, has opened up so that anyone can now view posts on the platform without needing an account. While users can discourage this by adjusting their settings, their posts will still be publicly visible elsewhere. The app also unveiled a new butterfly logo to represent it, as butterflies had been commonly used by users to tag their Bluesky handles. It continues developing features to compete with other social platforms like Threads.
